How to Turn Off a Generator During a Power Outage
- Turn the generator main circuit breaker OFF.
- Allow the generator to run for one minute without load to cool down.
- Turn the Auto/Off/Manual switch to the OFF position.
- Check the oil level and add if needed.
If the oil level is low, add some of the manufacturer’s recommended oil. We suggest keeping two quarts on hand in case you need it.
How to Restart a Generator During a Power Outage
- Turn the Auto/Off/Manual switch back to the Auto. After a brief delay, the generator will start if the utility power is still out.
- Allow the generator to warm up for one minute.
- Turn the generator main breaker back on. Once the utility power is restored the generator will automatically turn itself off.
How to Turn Off a Generator When the Power Comes Back On
Most generators have an automatic transfer switch. This switch automatically turns off the generator when the power returns. As long as this switch is set to “AUTO” your generator will turn off automatically as needed.
If your generator doesn’t turn off automatically, you can turn your generator off manually. Turn the generator main circuit breaker to OFF and allow the generator to run for a minute or so without load to cool down. Then, turn the switch in the control panel to the OFF position.
Reach out to your local Generac authorized service provider for repairs. You may have a faulty automatic transfer switch or other electrical issues.
