Where Should You Install an EV Charger at Home?

If you're deciding where to install an EV charger at home, start with where you park every day. The cable needs to reach the charging port without being stretched tight or crossing a walkway. We then check where your electrical panel is and if it can support a Level 2 charger.

Those two factors usually narrow down the best charger location, along with code, equipment requirements, weather exposure, and available mounting space.

Garage or Outside?

If you park in a garage, installing the charger inside keeps it out of direct snow, ice, and rain. We still need to put it where the cable easily reaches the car.

No garage? An EV charger can be installed outside. We use a charger made for outdoor use and find a spot where you can plug in without dragging the cable across the driveway or a walkway.

Distance from the Panel Matters Most

The charger needs an electrical connection back to the panel. The farther apart they are, the more cable and electrical work the installation takes.

We look at the panel and your parking spot together. Saving a few feet of cable does not help if you end up with a charger that is hard to reach every day.

Reaching the Charge Port

Where is the charging port on your EV? It sounds simple, but it can change where we put the charger.

Some ports are near the front of the vehicle. Others are near the rear. We look at how you park and make sure the cable reaches without being pulled tight.

If you expect to buy a second EV, tell us. We can plan for both vehicles now instead of choosing a spot that only works for one. Home charging is one of the benefits of EV chargers, but the charger still needs to be convenient to use.

Does Your Panel Have Capacity?

An empty breaker space does not mean your electrical system has enough capacity for a Level 2 charger. We perform a load calculation to see how much electricity the house already needs and if there is room for the charger.

Some older Upstate NY homes need an electrical panel upgrade before a Level 2 charger can be added. Other homes have enough capacity as they are, or a load-management setup can work.

Our electrical panel upgrade guide explains what we check when the existing panel is already close to its limit.

EV Charger Installation: What's Involved

We start an EV charger installation by looking at the panel, where you park, and where the charger will go. From there, we determine what electrical work and permits are needed.

Some Level 2 chargers are hardwired. Others are designed to plug into an outlet such as a NEMA 14-50. We check the charger and installation location to determine which setup fits the job.

The installation then goes through any required inspection.

Cold Weather Considerations for Upstate NY

An outdoor charger in Upstate NY needs to be easy to use in January, not just July. Charging cables get stiffer in deep cold, and snow and ice can make a poorly placed charger hard to reach.

Around Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and other snowy areas, we look at where you shovel and where the plow pushes snow. We do not want to put a pedestal where it will spend the winter buried in a snow pile.

The connector needs a place to stay off the ground and out of snow, ice, and standing water.

Clearance and Code

There is no single distance from the house that works for every charger. Where we can mount it depends on the charger, your property, nearby electrical equipment, and local code.

We check those requirements before installing the charger.

Can You Install an EV Charger Yourself?

A Level 2 charger is not a simple plug-in project. We need to check what the electrical system can support, and the new circuit has to meet electrical code. Permits and an inspection can be required too.

Our electricians take care of that work without giving you a wiring project to figure out on your own.

What It Costs

The cost depends on what the installation requires. A charger going on a garage wall near a panel with enough capacity is a different job from running power farther away or making changes at the panel.

We look at the panel, distance, charger location, and permit requirements before giving you a quote.

Get a Free In-Home Assessment

Home Power Systems offers a free in-home property assessment. We look at where you park, where the charger could go, and what your electrical panel can support.

We work throughout Upstate NY, including the Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse areas. Financing is available for qualifying projects, and HPS offers a maintenance program for ongoing system care.

FAQs

Is it better to install an EV charger in the garage or outside?

A garage can protect the charger and cable from direct snow, ice, and rain, but an outdoor installation can work well when properly rated equipment is used and the charger is positioned for safe, convenient access.

How close should an EV charger be to the electrical panel?

Closer can reduce the amount of wiring and conduit required, but convenience, parking position, code requirements, and whether the cable comfortably reaches the vehicle also matter.

Do I need an electrical panel upgrade for a Level 2 charger?

Not always. A load calculation should determine whether the existing electrical service has enough capacity. Some homes can support the charger as-is, while others may need a panel upgrade or load-management solution.

What Customers
Say About Us

On the hottest day yet in recorded history, on the morning after the Independence Day holiday, the team of Jeff, Wayne, Steve and Isaac appeared before 8:00, ready to go to work. The coordination and efficiency on display over the next few hours brought to mind a military exercise. And they did this in a very customer friendly manner. The completed installation is beautiful, they left their work areas immaculate, and shrubs in the installation area were gently treated. I also want to acknowledge our salesman, Jeff, who worked hard to secure our business. I am so glad we decided to go with HPS...
